the barrett behind barrett all
Hi, I’m Patty Barrett!
I’m a certified coach, professional comedian, leadership developer, and Director of Learning for Improv Asylum.
My ✨ purpose✨ is to empower EVERY SINGLE PERSON to live their fullest life.
That means having self-compassion for being human, self-awareness of strengths and barriers, and motivation to do uncomfortable things, be a little cringe, and make shit happen.
MY STORY
In 2005, The Killers were on the radio and I was having a revelation.
If I wanted to be ✨coming out of my cage and doing just fine✨ I’d have to change out of my XXL men’s Gap sweatsuit, quit eating Goldfish on my couch, and push myself beyond my comfort zone.
I kissed my wallet-sized photo of Tina Fey for good luck and signed up for an improv comedy class at Improv Asylum in the North End of Boston.
What I assumed would be a mere tool for coming out of my shell actually turned into a 20+ year career and relationship with the theater. Through improv, I found community, purpose, flow, and confidence that I never thought possible for me.
Especially not in a room packed with 200+ people.
As silly as it sounds, improv was the catalyst for all of my success. It helped me:
Quit my full-time job to perform for a living;
Move to Los Angeles;
Become the worst HR manager at the best ad agency ever;
Facilitate leadership development programs at Reebok & adidas;
Get certified as a coach;
Start my own business;
AND MORE!
Back in the day (and sometimes still), I would tell myself conspiracy theories ABOUT MYSELF and I actually believed them:
“I’m too weird to be taken seriously.”
“I’m too independent to be in a relationship.”
“I’m too disorganized to work for myself.”
“I’m too emotional, loud, distracted, anxious, TOO MUCH.”
And the truth is… I am all of those things! But I’m successful because of them, not in spite of them.
BUT WHY DOES THIS MATTER? Good question, I’m so glad you asked.
People are not well.
According to the 2024 World Happiness Report, people of all generations are not happy. In fact, young people in the U.S. (below 30) are now LESS HAPPY than older people (60+). Women, in particular, feel more negative emotions than men. COOL COOL COOL.
(In this report, “happiness” is based on GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, having someone to count on, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and freedom from corruption.)
Basically, things are grim and I hate it. I want to help people take action against it.
While we can’t control ALL of these variables - I do feel that there is SOME action we can take in order to become “happier” and more satisfied with our lives. We can’t control inflation or the political landscape, but we can control how we choose to spend our time and whom we spend it with.
My goal is to help PEOPLE GET WELL by finding their community, their purpose, and their version of flow. If that early 2000s teenager in the Gap sweatsuit can do it, anyone can!
My blended experience in comedy, HR, and professional development provides me with a unique perspective and an engaging approach. With humor and openness, we’ll focus on whole-person growth by aligning your goals, values, and vision.
Stop being your own personal conspiracy theorist and start literally living your best life. ✨
